:: Conference Introduction

Sustainable development stands as a proactive response to the challenges of the contemporary world, paving the way towards organizing and safeguarding the future. In line with the World Environment Commission's definition, sustainable development strives to meet the needs of both present and future generations. Its primary objective is to enhance the quality of human life on Earth, achieved through the harmonious collaboration of sustainable economic, social, and environmental endeavors.

Spatial planning emerges as a pivotal strategy capable of positively influencing various dimensions of sustainability encompassing the economy, society, culture, environment, and collaboration. By emphasizing the concept and essence of strategic spatial planning in metropolitan development, cities' sustainability can be bolstered through balanced spatial resource allocation and comprehensive developmental considerations. The Isfahan Master Plan, a cornerstone urban development scheme initiated in 2023, showcases a spatial-strategic and collaborative methodology that has positioned the Institute of Leading Scholars as a key scholarly entity driving Isfahan's sustainable urban progression. Consequently, the 14th International Conference on Sustainable Development and Urban Development has designated "Spatial Planning and Sustainable Development of Metropolises" as a focal theme for discussion on December 21-22, 2024, presenting research outcomes and insights intertwining with Isfahan's urban landscape and soliciting expertise from both national and international professionals.

Furthermore, the conference will spotlight new technologies, notably artificial intelligence, as transformative innovations embedded in contemporary development agendas across urban, industrial, and commercial spheres. While these technologies hold the potential to exacerbate environmental challenges, amplify climate crises, widen disparities, foster conflicts, and more disconcertingly, be applied in war-related scenarios, dissemination of fake news, among others, their judicious application could propel sustainability, eradicate poverty, secure global peace, and catalyze human advancement in diverse industrial and commercial arenas, ensuring universal accessibility. Hence, the peaceful integration of novel digital innovations and technologies in alignment with sustainable development objectives sketches a future characterized by adaptability, sustainable progress, and societal well-being.

Guided by this vision, the Institute of Higher Education of Leading Scholars remains steadfast in championing sustainable development objectives through its educational and scientific pursuits, integrating fresh perspectives and ideas into sustainable urban development practices. This trajectory culminates in the conference's dedicated exploration of the second thematic pillar, "New Technologies and Sustainable Development," slated for December 21-22, 2024, underscoring the imperative for technological innovation in advancing sustainability goals for public good.
